In this lesson, students will create solutions to protect houses from flooding and heavy rains.
Students will create miniature houses, design solutions utilizing gutters, downspouts, barrels, and rain gardens represented by everyday objects, and test solutions using watering cans to simulate heavy rains.
The background information included is specific to New York State, but this lesson is relevant and useful for classrooms outside of New York.
The focus on learning through play is excellent for younger students.
This lesson is a great introduction to modeling designs for solutions.
Prerequisites
The lesson will take 30-45 minutes.
It may benefit students to see examples of (or read stories about) flooding and heavy rains before they begin the design challenge. Students can read "Fabienne's Wild Weather Adventure" before starting this lesson.
Differentiation & Implementation
After completing this lesson, older students can discuss green infrastructure and the careers associated with its implementation.
Teachers may want to cut the straws and house templates ahead of time for very young students.
Students can research other adaptation strategies to combat climate change impacts, such as cooling centers to combat very hot days.
If time permits, students may enjoy decorating their houses.
