Synopsis
This podcast episode features conversations with Emma Tamlin and Julian Tersigni about how people can "prep" for climate change through mitigation and adaptation.
Students will learn about specific mitigation solutions (actions that slow or stop global warming) like tree planting and green roofs and adaptation solutions (to deal with climate change) like ensuring hospitals have access to backup power or using permeable pavement to reduce flooding and recharge groundwater.
The conversations featured will provide students with a great introduction to mitigation and adaptation strategies for dealing with our changing climate.
Additional Prerequisites
Advertisements play during this podcast.
Students should have prior knowledge of the impacts of climate change.
Differentiation
Cross-curricular connections can be made in language arts classes focusing on non-fiction research, or in health classes discussing how people can stay healthy amidst a changing climate.
After listening, create a student-generated list of strategies for mitigation and adaptation featured in the podcast. Then, have students choose one strategy to research further and present their findings to the class.
As an extension, students can write a letter to their board of education or local government to advocate for one of the strategies to be employed in their school or town.
