Scientific Reports Grades 9-12
Synopsis
This is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report that was released in 2018.
The report is divided into several sections detailing the impacts of global warming, ways to reduce human-produced greenhouse gas emissions, the feasibility of different adaptation and mitigation efforts, and suggestions for sustainable development.
The resource includes summaries and a glossary of terms.
Each chapter can be downloaded individually.
This is a good resource for virtual learning, as students can access it online.
Additional Prerequisites
This report uses dense scientific language. The Summary for Policymakers is the shortest and easiest part for students to understand.
The Executive Summaries, at the beginning of each chapter, provide a good overview of the section.
Differentiation
This is a good primary source document for students to analyze. Teachers could ask students to identify how a primary source, like the IPCC report, differs from a secondary source, like a newspaper article about the report.
Teachers could divide students into five groups to work on the 5 chapters. In a virtual setting, teachers could use breakout rooms for group work.
Other resources on this topic include this graphic novel about the history of the IPCC, this video overview of the IPCC 2018 report, and this course on climate politics.
