Corvette Goes Green with Planned Hybrid, Electric Rollout

The famous Chevy Corvette sports car is going electric.

General Motors (GM) President Mark Reuss announced the news this week. “We will have an electrified Corvette next year,” he told CNBC. A fully electric version will come later, Reuss said.

Car experts took that to mean GM will likely release a hybrid version of the Corvette C8 in late 2023. The current gas-powered version will still be offered, Reuss told CNBC. A hybrid version will most likely cost more money. Hybrid cars can cost up to 20% more than their fully gas-powered equals.

Corvette joins other top sports car makers that have decided to go green. A number of hybrid or electric versions of gas-powered cars are already on the road. They include the electric Jaguar I-Pace and Ford Mustang Mach-E and the hybrid Porsche Panamera.

Building an electric version of the Corvette is just a piece of a larger goal for GM. It would like to sell only zero-emission vehicles by 2035. But getting loyal Corvette fans to accept an electric muscle car could be hard.

A Corvette blogger told Fox Business, "They are not sure what they are going to get."
