Per Capita Electricity from Fossil Fuels, Nuclear and Renewables

Ask a Question

  • This interactive chart shows the per capita use of electricity from fossil fuels, nuclear, and renewables from the year 2000.
  • A comparative view by countries or continents can be generated.
Teaching Tips

  • Data can be viewed as a chart or table.
  • Pressing the play button shows the changes since 2000.
Additional Prerequisites
  • Learners need be familiar with these 3 sources of electricity: fossil fuels, nuclear, and renewables.
  • Educator would need time to get familiar with this interactive media and decide on how to implement it with the learners.
  • There are other related interactive maps for measuring similar parameters.
  • This can be used to create awareness about one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Scientist Notes

Educators should note the stack percentages in the 3 energy sources (fossil fuel, nuclear and renewables). For instance, percentage of energy production in the chart from South Africa is fossil fuel (89%) and nuclear (no value); yet there is a graduation: renewables (6.2%). Thus, nuclear should have had a value of 4.8%, but this is missing in the content. It is not out of place for educators to sort the missing values for other countries since the chart has the graduation already. The resource is recommended for teaching.
