Summer Science Activities: Parent Blog

Welcome to my summer science activities blog! As a parent of a busy 5-year-old and 6-year-old, I understand the mix of nerves and excitement that comes with the end of the school year and the start of summer. While I cherish the time spent with my kids, it can sometimes be a challenge to keep their minds engaged and entertained. That's why I'm writing this blog, to share my simple guide to surviving a whole week of summer with your little ones.

To make it even easier, I've created a handy planner for you to print and hang on your fridge. And don't worry, I've got you covered if you have a child with special needs. My 6-year-old is on the autism spectrum, and I'll walk you through how I modified each activity to accommodate a neuroatypical child versus a neurotypical child. So, let's dive into these exciting activities and make this summer one to remember for both you and your kids!

Sun Up, Sun Down

Subjects: Science, Social Studies, Earth and Space Sciences, Civics, English Language Arts

Resource Type: Activity

Learning Outcomes

In this activity, kids learn about the role the sun plays in our daily lives and how solar energy can be used.

When I first found this amazing lesson plan, I have to admit, I was completely overwhelmed. There were just so many awesome activities to choose from, and being someone who isn't a teacher, I had no clue where to even begin. But then, something magical happened. I stumbled upon this incredible video by none other than Elizabeth Ward herself, a former early childhood, elementary, and English as a foreign language educator, the genius behind this lesson plan. Let me tell you, it was a game-changer. In this video, Elizabeth walks you through the activities step by step, making it super easy to follow along. Suddenly, what seemed like an impossible task became an exciting adventure waiting to happen.

Sun Up, Sun Down

During the summer, it can be challenging to keep kids entertained and engaged in educational activities. That's why I love incorporating summer science activities into our routine. This activity was a huge hit with my 5-year-old. As he colored his picture, he made connections between the sun and plant health. It was amazing to see him express his understanding and explain, "The sun keeps plants healthy."

We then had a group discussion about the sun and what it means to them. Both of my kids enjoyed this process and eagerly shared their knowledge about the sun. Admittedly, it was a bit more challenging to keep my 6-year-old, who has ASD, engaged in the coloring activity. However, by constantly refocusing him on his task, he was able to participate. Additionally, I included an animated photosynthesis video from the lesson plan, which he thoroughly enjoyed. It's moments like these that make summer science activities so rewarding for both kids and parents alike.

Sun Up, Sun Down

There are numerous possibilities for utilizing this lesson plan. For instance, you could take a trip to the library and borrow the book "Sun Up, Sun Down" by Gail Gibbons for a captivating read-aloud session. This resource also provides various additional instructions for demonstrations, mini-lessons, and station activities to cater to different learning styles. This flexibility allows you to customize the lesson plan according to your kids’ preferences. It also ensures that you can provide engaging and interactive activities that will enhance their learning experience.

Learning Outcomes

In this activity, kids learn where food comes from and the importance of taking care of natural resources.

Exploring the wonders of nature and the origins of our food can be a fun-filled adventure for kids, and what better way to do it than through engaging summer science activities! In the activity, Where Does Your Food Come From?, my kids excitedly discovered where our food comes from and the importance of taking care of our natural resources. To kick off the activity, I posed a simple question to the little ones, "What foods do we eat as a family?" Their eyes lit up with enthusiasm as they chimed in, shouting out their favorites, "grilled cheese, corn on the cob, carrots!" Their excitement was contagious, and it set the perfect stage for our exploration.

Where Does Your Food Come From?

Equipped with their sentence starter document, they got to work, filling in the blanks and drawing the foods we commonly enjoy at home. It was a delightful sight to see their creativity unfold on paper. But this activity was more than just drawing and listing our favorite foods. It sparked a conversation about the fundamental needs of plants. We discussed the essentials for plants to thrive - sunlight, water, and nutrients from the soil. As we delved into this discussion, the kids began to grasp the interconnectedness of it all - how the food we eat relies on plants' well-being, and how we, in turn, must protect and nurture our natural resources.

Engaging in summer science activities like this not only teaches our kids important lessons about the environment but also instills a sense of responsibility and care for the world around them. It was incredible to witness their curiosity and understanding unfold before my eyes. So as you plan your summer activities, don't forget to incorporate this exciting science adventure. Understanding Weather

Subjects: Science, Earth and Space Sciences

Resource Type: Activity

Learning Outcomes

This activity introduces the concept of weather to kids.

Introducing kids to the fascinating world of weather can be an exciting and educational summer science activity. I decided to start by taking my kids outside to explore the wonders of the ever-changing elements. As we ventured into the great outdoors, my little ones' faces lit up with excitement. They immediately began describing the weather they observed, pointing out the fluffy clouds scattered across the sky and remarking on the sunny weather accompanied by a gentle breeze. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and I couldn't wait to dive deeper into this captivating topic.

Understanding Weather

After observing and discussing the weather outside, we moved indoors to continue our exploration using the power of technology. With the help of Google Slides and a lively discussion, we further dove into the concepts of weather. Each of my kids eagerly filled out their student documents, drawing, coloring, and writing a sentence about the weather they had observed earlier. However, the highlight of the activity, without a doubt, was the creation of the weather wheel. They were absolutely thrilled to make their very own tool to aid them in their weather observations. The excitement in their eyes was infectious, and I couldn't help but be filled with joy as they eagerly crafted their unique weather wheels.

Understanding Weather

Even though my ASD son had some difficulty transitioning from the great outdoors to indoors, we made sure to provide extra support for him during this activity. While my other son eagerly filled out his student document, my ASD  son needed a little more guidance and encouragement to stay focused. With patience and gentle redirection, he eventually joined in on the fun, drawing, coloring, and writing a sentence about the weather we had observed earlier. The highlight of the activity for him, just like his sibling, was the creation of the weather wheel. Seeing his determination and sense of accomplishment as he crafted his own unique tool made me so happy. This summer science activity not only helped my kids explore the wonders of weather but also provided an opportunity for my ASD son to practice focus and engagement while fine-tuning his observation skills. It was a beautiful reminder of the power of inclusivity and the potential for growth and learning in all children, regardless of their unique needs.
